"Mastering Cornhole: A Guide to Rules, Scoring, and Winning Strategies"

More than just being a game, cornhole has become a tradition at the backyard parties and tailgates in America. More and more people are showing interest in learning the game and adding it to their celebrations. In this game, two teams throw bean bags into the holes of the two cornhole boards laid on the ground. The teams get points after they manage to throw the bag into the hole or if the bag stays on the board.

If you are learning to play the game, here are the game’s rules and scoring that you need to familiarize yourself with.

  1. First things first. Decide which team will be throwing bags first. To make the decision, you can flip a coin, spin a bottle or let the previous winner go first.

  2. With two players, each player stands on one side of one board opposite the other player. Each player will have four bags in opposite colors to the opponent’s bags.

  3. The players get to toss their bags toward the opposite board alternately until they are left with no bags. The goal is to toss the bag into the hole. The players must throw their bags from the sides of their board, not stepping out in front of their boards.

  4. First, the score is tallied and after that, the bags are removed from the board.

  5. Make sure to tally the score after all bags have been thrown from one side. The team’s score is determined using cancellation scoring:

  6. A bag lying on the board counts for 1 point.

  7. A bag that goes through the hole is worth 3 points.

  8. After determining the per team score, subtract the score of the team that scored less from the score of the team that scores more. The team that won this turn begins the next turn. In case there is a tie again, the team that won first will go first.

  9. The team that scores 21 points first is the winning team.
